The study of Tibet in general and Tibetan language hold importance in many different ways:
Tibet holds great significance as an ecological and geopolitical area, serving as a hub that links Inner, East, and South Asia. Being the highest point on the planet, Tibet is commonly referred to as the "third pole," characterized by vast glaciers and rivers that supply water to approximately one third of the global population. The implications of climate change in Tibet and its consequences for a large part of Asia are of utmost concern for academic and community groups.
Tibetan culture has exerted a significant influence in various parts of Asia over an extended period. This influence has extended beyond Asia since the 20th century, manifesting prominently in the Himalayan regions of India and globally.
Furthermore, Tibetan is recognized as the most extensive and significant collection of Buddhist dharma globally, as the Tibetan language was primarily used for the purpose of translating the teachings of Buddha.
The strategic importance of the Tibetan language in safeguarding India's security is paramount, particularly in light of the advanced age of the Dalai Lama and the growing instability surrounding the political situation in Tibet. Hence, in addition to the aforementioned reasons, the significance of Tibet within the framework of the India-China relationship is anticipated to be heightened. This elevation is attributed to the presence of Tibetan individuals deployed within Tibet along the border regions with India as part of the Chinese military.
There has been a notable surge in interest pertaining to Tibetan language and studies within India, prompting heightened attention towards this subject matter. Annually, nearly twenty young Indian scholars present their research papers on Tibet at Dharamshala. The sixth iteration of the Young Indian Research Scholars Conference on Tibetan Studies is scheduled to occur in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, mirroring the established tradition. However, in contrast to Western scholars who commenced studying the Tibetan language as early as the 1980s, Indian scholars have not yet acquired proficiency in Tibetan
