In today’s world of digital learning environment, foreign language teaching requires a shift from traditional grammar-translation methods to learner-centred, interactive, and context-driven pedagogies. Rapid developments in educational technology, changing learner profiles, and the growing emphasis on communicative competence demand that language educators continuously update their teaching strategies.
This Faculty Development Programme (FDP) aims to provide language teachers with exposure to innovative pedagogical approaches that enhance learner engagement, communicative ability, and intercultural awareness. The programme focuses on practical classroom strategies such as task-based learning, communicative language teaching, use of digital tools, multimodal resources, authentic materials, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
The FDP will bring together experienced teachers to share best practices, classroom-tested methods, and research-informed approaches for teaching foreign languages effectively in higher education contexts. The participants of this FDP will be encouraged to critically reflect on their own teaching practices and explore ways to redesign language courses to meet contemporary academic and professional needs.
Overall, the FDP seeks to strengthen pedagogical competence, promote innovation in language classrooms, and contribute to improved learning outcomes in foreign language education.

Dr. Arghya Chakraborty is Assistant Professor, English Language at the School of International Cooperation, Security and Strategic Languages (SICSSL) since January 2023. Previously, he has worked as an Assistant Professor at Parul University (2018-19), ITM SLS Baroda University (2019-22) and Marwadi University (2022-23). Dr. Chakraborty has completed his Ph.D. from the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. His research area is ‘English Fiction’ under which he has explored different Temporal and Spatial constructs of Narrative in the selected Nigerian and German Novels. His areas of interest include English Poetry, English Fiction, American Literature, Latin-American Literature, Drama & Performance and English Language Teaching (ELT).
Devjani is an Associate Professor at the Department of English, Miranda House, Delhi University. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature from Presidency College, Kolkata, a Masters from Delhi University, an MPhil from JNU and a PhD from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Delhi. During her doctoral studies, she was awarded the Charles Wallace Trust grant for research in the UK (2015). Her doctoral thesis is on Bengali children’s periodicals in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Her interests lie in childhood studies and its intersections with other cultural projects, particularly critical literacy, pedagogy and nationalism. Her work has appeared in several journals. She also writes extensively for newspapers and news websites.
Mr. Snehasis Thakur is a Subject Matter Specialist in Mandarin Language in the School of International Cooperation, Security, and Strategic Languages (SICSSL) since 24th September 2024. Mr. Snehasis Thakur has done his Graduation and Masters from Visva Bharati University in Chinese language and Culture. Recognized for his exceptional dedication in academics, Mr. Snehasis Thakur was awarded with a one year scholarship program to study Chinese in Xiangtan University, Hunan province in China under the Chinese Scholarship Council program in the year 2014-2015. Mr. Snehasis is currently pursuing his Ph.D. from Visva Bharati University and his area of research interest is ‘Child Literature in China’. Mr. Thakur was invited to attend and deliver a keynote lecture in the Young Sinologist Program held in Shanghai, China in the year 2018. Mr Thakur has also taken part in summer camp programs held in Yunnan University, China in 2013 & 2017. He has qualified for the Chinese Level Test (HSK) with very good marks. Prior to joining RRU, Mr Thakur has vivid and profound working experience in various industries such as SECPO- 1 (KMPCL), Amazon development centre India Pvt Ltd, Amity University Rajasthan, Eastern Command Chinese language School in Panagarh, Nihao Calcutta, All India Radio (ESD Division) and various other B2B interpretation projects.
Prof. Sonya Surabhi Gupta is Professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies in the Department of Foreign Languages at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Her research interests focus on knowledge flows in the Global South, with special reference to Latin America and India in a cross-cultural context. Her most recent publications include the co-authored book Decolonizing Development: Liberatory Epistemologies from India and Latin America (Routledge 2023, with Rahul A. Sirohi) and the edited volume Subalternities in India and Latin America: Dalit Autobiographies and the Testimonio (Routledge, 2022). She is also Hindi translator of works by Spanish and Latin American writers. In 1987, she established the Centre for Hispanic Studies at the prestigious English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, which she headed till 2006, when she was invited by the Jamia Milia Islamia to establish the Centre for Spanish and Latin American Studies, of which she has been the founder director. She is currently the President of the Association of Indian Hispanists.
Dr. Gitanjali Singh is an Assistant Professor in the Department of French Studies at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. She teaches French (20th century) and Francophone literature. She has been awarded Ph.D. (French) from Banaras Hindu University. Before joining Banaras Hindu University, she worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages at Aligarh Muslim University (August to October 2015). Her research interests are French and Francophone literature, Translation Studies, and the Teaching of French as a Foreign Language (FLE). In 2021, she received the award for “Outstanding French Teacher” for University Teachers (North Zone) by the French Institute in India (Embassy of France, New Delhi, India). She was also a Guest Lecturer at Cégep de Chicoutimi, Québec, Canada (2022-2023). She has developed courses on History of Art in France and French Cinema for M.A. in French (Online) IGNOU, New Delhi. She is an Academic Counsellor of French for IGNOU, New Delhi. In addition, she has also launched a SWAYAM course titled, French through Texts and Media to improve Writing and Comprehension skills in French.
Svetlana Latysheva is an Associate Professor at the Department of Russian Language at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Sophia University, Japan. She graduated from the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Moscow State University. She came to Japan in 1991 and worked in the planning and publicity department of a major company and at the NHK Radio International Broadcasting Station. In 2003, she became a part-time lecturer in the Department of Russian Language, Faculty of Foreign Studies, Sophia University, and then a full-time lecturer, before assuming the current position in 2009. Her interests of research are Theory of Translation, Methods of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language.
Loïc Renoud is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Okayama University, Japan, where he teaches French Studies (language, francophone literature, and linguistics). He has done his Ph.D (French) from Lumière University Lyon 2 in Applied Linguistics. His interests are diverse and include foreign language instruction, francophone literature, semiotics, and linguistics. In 2019, he was the recipient of the ‘best article’ award from the Société japonaise de didactique du français. He was also RJDF (Revue japonaise de didactique du français)’s Chief Editor from 2020 to 2023. His latest works include two co-authored book chapters in A cross-linguistic study of “naru expressions” from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics and philosophy, and a co-authored article to be published in the International Journal of Francophone Studies.
Dr. Jyoti Sharma is an Assistant Professor at the Department of German Studies, BHU. She obtained her Ph.D. in 2015 from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Since September 2015 she has served as Assistant Professor in the Department of German Studies at Banaras Hindu University, where she teaches German linguistics, literature, didactics, translation and intercultural communication. She was Guest-Faculty at JNU (2006-2015), language instructor at the Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi (2009-2015), and German-language consultant for Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) (2012-2013). Her research centres on sociolinguistics, youth language practices, intercultural communication, translation studies, and German as a Foreign Language (DaF). She is currently Principal Investigator on an ICSSR-funded major research project (2024-26) titled “A transdisciplinary exploration of gendered youth slang and informal communication patterns in university campuses: A comparative study of EFLU and BHU”.
